I've had a 1600 cross flow in modest tune (flywheel dyno at 112hp) for 30 years of very aggressive (and fairly successful) autocrossing. Early on I destroyed a number of half shafts and spyder gears. Jim is right about the race shafts(Winners Circle, I think) and the limited slip. With aggressive tires (this year I'm running the Hoosier 205-60 13 tires.
But the key is coming off the line. If you build a setup such as we have, and you resist popping the clutch, you should be fine. One word of caution: I believe that the half shafts for a car with spoked wheels are a different length. Make certain they are fitted properly...especially if you have converted from spoked to solid or vice versa.
