I can tell you from experience that a well prepared 1500 is about all they can take. I have broken two (1 axle shaft and 1 spider gear) in my Mark III. It has the Cosworth style head with twin Weber side draft and I would say 115-120 hp. I also run 185 width autocross tires so the rear end takes a lot of torque.
I've
since gone to a limited slip and use race prepared aftermarket axle
shafts with double roller hubs. This is the standard SCCA racer setup
in the United States. Fixed the problem but a lot lighter in the wallet.
